Magic Lost, Trouble Found ~ Lisa Shearin

magic-lostMy name is Raine Benares. I’m a seeker. The people who hire me are usually happy when I find things. But some things are better left unfound. I’m a sorceress of moderate powers, from an extended family of smugglers and thieves. With a mix of street smarts and magic spells, I can usually take care of myself. But when my friend Quentin, a not-quite-reformed thief, steals an amulet from the home of a powerful necromancer, I find myself wrapped up in more trouble than I care for. I like attention as much as the next girl, but having an army of militant goblins hunting me down is not my idea of a good time. The amulet they’re after holds limitless power, derived from an ancient, soul-stealing stone. And when I take possession of the item, it takes possession of me. Now my moderate powers are increasing beyond anything I can imagine-but is the résumé enhancement worth my soul?

High fantasy and urban fantasy converge in Lisa Shearin’s Raine Benares series. It’s a delightful mix that offers something for everyone: Humor, goblins, action, mages, and a shot of double-edged romance.

Raine is a street smart heroine whose family name conjures images of pirates and convicts. She’s a respected, sought-out seeker, but by novel’s end she’s something more than anyone bargained for. While the storyline is fast paced and easy to get caught up in, the characters are what makes this series so wonderful. To give you just a taste, there’s Tam, a sexy goblin with a dark past, and Mychael, the gorgeous Paladin of the Conclave Guardians, an order bound to protect. But, please, don’t let the words “sexy” and “gorgeous” convince you that this series is fluff. Far from it, Magic Lost, Trouble Found is built on the foundation of a solid fantasy world, intrigue, and a plot arc that leaves you wondering what will happen next.

One last thing: When you  pick up the first book in the series, make sure you can get to the second book, Armed and Magical, quickly. And then, like me, you’ll be left eagerly waiting for April’s release of The Trouble with Demons.

  1. I know! And that’s why I had to put that in there!

Tam is nothing at all what you’d expect of a “goblin,” and between him and Mychael…Man! And in this one? Even the bad guy is something. Seriously good stuff!
